What is the purpose of Tarion?
Tarion is a not-for-profit consumer protection organization established by the Ontario government to administer the province's new home warranty program. For over 40 years, Tarion has served new home buyers and new homeowners by ensuring that one of their life's biggest investments is protected.
Can a builder sell without Tarion?
By law, a new-build home cannot be sold or built in Ontario unless Tarion has approved the home for enrolment in the warranties and protection plan. Anyone selling or building a new-build home without approval from Tarion is operating illegally.
What is covered by Tarion?
Seven-Year Warranty Provides coverage against major structural defects. These include defects in work or materials that affect a structural loadbearing element of the home, resulting in an actual structural failure. The seven-year MSD warranty includes significant damage due to soil movement*, major cracks in basement walls, collapse or serious distortion of joints or roof structure and chemical failure of materials. It also includes environmentally harmful substances or hazards (e.g. radon).
Does Tarion warranty transfer to new owner?
The Tarion warranty can be transferred to the new owner by contacting the Tarion Warranty Corporation. You will need to have proof of ownership by submitting the statement of adjustments, transfer deed or Agreement of Purchase and Sale.
